The Loka Initiative proposes to uplift the voices of and convene culture keepers of Indigenous traditions, representing different communities, areas of expertise, and geographies, and build a chorus of diverse voices that transforms the fear and anger around climate change and enables Indigenous resilience and empowerment. The goal of this three-year project (2021-2023) is to establish a community of practice among culture keepers of Indigenous traditions in the United States, across the Americas, and globally in order to center the Indigenous worldview and uplift a common understanding of Indigenous resilience in practice. This is a complete departure from the tradition model of inviting Indigenous elders to conferences and meetings only as a token representative, not respecting them as equals to other stake-holders and decision makers. The Loka Initiative will be guided, informed and managed by Indigenous elders and their traditional wisdom.
