This project aims to develop and implement an Indigenous-led climate change mitigation strategy within and across the Amazon. Indigenous Peoples, with a demonstrated history of sustainable forest management, can provide effective strategies for climate change mitigation in forests. This involves keeping fossil fuels underground; and supporting Indigenous Life Plans.
Life Plans represent Indigenous visions for sustainable development within their communities. Supporting Indigenous Life Plans is important because it fulfills material needs within communities for energy, transportation, communication, education and health. When these development needs are financially supported, community leaders are less likely to give their consent to extractive industries such as oil development on their land, which typically accompany promises for more conventional forms of development.
